There’s something unmistakably calming about rolling into Renmark, where the Murray River slows, the air feels a little lighter, and time seems to stretch out just enough for you to actually enjoy it. On this week's road segment, Ned McHenry and Graham Goodings take us to explore one of the Riverland’s most relaxed and underrated riverfront stays.

Our base? Discovery Parks Renmark Riverfront, perfectly positioned right on the banks of the Murray River in Renmark.

Things to do & see around Renmark

Once you settle into the rhythm of the Murray, you quickly realise Renmark isn’t just a stopover, it’s a gateway into one of South Australia’s most diverse river regions. Everything is close, relaxed, and shaped by the river itself.

  1. The Murray River

The Murray River isn’t just a backdrop here, it is the experience.

Start your morning on the water, where the river is glassy and still. Kayaking is one of the best ways to explore the bends and backwaters around Renmark, with plenty of birdlife, shaded banks, and quiet stretches where it feels like you’ve got the whole place to yourself.

If you prefer something easier, hire a small boat or join a river cruise and drift past towering red gums while the river does all the work. Fishing is also huge here,  especially for cod and carp, and it’s the kind of spot where even beginners tend to have a bit of luck.

  1. Riverland wineries & cellar doors

Just beyond Renmark, the Riverland opens up into one of Australia’s most underrated wine regions.

A standout is the eco-focused Banrock Station Wine & Wetland Centre, where you can pair wine tasting with wetland walks and birdwatching. It’s relaxed, scenic, and very “Riverland” in the best way.

Across the region, cellar doors tend to be small, welcoming, and unpretentious, except winemakers who are more than happy to pour you a tasting and tell you exactly what makes their patch of river soil different.

It’s not about polished wine tourism here,  it’s about connection to place.

  1. Scenic walks, river trails & lookout spots

One of the most underrated parts of Renmark is how easy it is to get outside and explore on foot.

The riverfront trails near town are perfect for a slow morning walk or sunset wander, with long stretches of shaded river gums and calm water views.

A short drive out also opens up wider Riverland scenery, think open landscapes, orchards, and lookout points where you can see just how far the Murray goes through the region.

  1. Local produce, orchards & roadside stalls

The Riverland is one of South Australia’s key food sources, and it shows.Depending on the season, you’ll find roadside stalls selling everything from citrus and stone fruit to almonds, olives, and homemade preserves. It’s the kind of region where “fresh” actually means picked that morning.

If you time it right, local markets around Renmark and nearby towns bring together growers and makers showcasing regional honey, baked goods, oils, and small batch produce.

It’s simple, honest food,  and it tastes better because of it.

  1. Explore nearby Riverland towns

Part of the fun of staying in Renmark is using it as a base to explore nearby towns along the river.

Head east and you’ll find small river communities with their own character, historic pubs, and quiet riverfront reserves. Head west and you’ll pass orchards, vineyards, and long stretches of open landscape that feel untouched.

Each town has its own pace, but they all share the same thing, life built around the river.

  1. Wildlife, wetlands & nature encounters

If you’re even slightly into nature, the Riverland delivers.

Expect pelicans gliding across the water, flocks of cockatoos at sunset, and the occasional kangaroo near the riverbanks in the early morning.

Wetland areas around the region are especially active for birdlife, making it a great spot for photography or just quietly observing the natural rhythm of the river ecosystem.

  1. Sunset by the river

No matter how busy or relaxed your day has been, everything eventually leads back to the same place,  the river at sunset.

Find a spot along the banks at Discovery Parks or nearby river reserves, sit down, and watch the light change over the water. The Murray shifts colour, the air cools, and the whole region feels like it exhales at once.

It’s simple, but it’s the moment people remember most.

Stay Riverfront comfort right on the Murray

There are two easy ways to settle in here, depending on how you like to travel:

The Superior 2 Bedroom Cabin is ideal for a comfortable midweek escape. Think full kitchen, living space, and room to spread out after a day on the river. It’s the kind of place where you can come back, kick your shoes off, and watch the sun drop behind the gums.

Or, for the more social or extended-stay traveller, the powered sites offer unbeatable value,  especially with the flexibility of splitting a 10 night stay into two separate 5 night getaways with friends. It’s laid back camping with the river right at your doorstep.

Both options are valid until April 2027, making this one of those “lock it in now, enjoy later” kind of escapes.

But the real magic here isn’t just where you stay,  it’s what’s waiting just beyond your cabin door.

Why this escape works

What makes Renmark special isn’t just the scenery, it’s the pace. It’s the kind of destination where you can go from river cruising in the morning, to winery tasting in the afternoon, to sitting under the stars at night without ever feeling like you’re rushing between anything.

And with accommodation at Discovery Parks Renmark Riverfront as your base, everything just… flows.
